The Rubio Duo

Since 1983, The Rubio Duo has been delighting audiences with crowd-pleasing music for flute and classical guitar. Their innovative concert programs feature both the traditional and the new, with a special emphasis on music from the Americas. Jill and Douglas first began playing together when they were students at the University of Southern California. Since then, they have gone on to perform throughout the United States.

Flutist Jill Rubio performs frequently as a soloist, and as an orchestral and chamber musician. She is principal flute of the Orchestra of Northern New York, principal flute of Northern Symphonic Winds and a member the trio Sweet, Fair and Wise (tenor voice, flute and guitar.) For the past 32 years she has been half of the Rubio Flute & Guitar Duo with her husband Doug. Ms. Rubio is Adjunct Professor of Flute at The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, and Potsdam Central School’s high school and middle school band director. In 2016 she received the SUNY Potsdam President’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching, as well as the Distinguished Service Award from the New York State Band Directors Association. Every summer she is on staff at Crane Youth Music, teaching flute choir and conducting, and assisting with Flute Techniques. A native of Los Angeles, Jill received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Flute Performance from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, in the flute studio of Roger Stevens. She also studied flute and chamber music with James Walker and Mitchell Lurie, respectively, and conducting with William A. Schaefer. She was named Outstanding Graduate of the School of Music upon completion of her studies.

Douglas Rubio is Professor of Classical Guitar at the State University of New York at Potsdam. He has performed as a soloist at music festivals, universities, guitar societies, and concert series throughout the United States. He has been the featured concerto soloist with the Montecito (California) and Pennsylvania Centre chamber orchestras, and the Orchestra of Northern New York. Rubio is especially active in the field of chamber music. Since 1983 his has performed with the Rubio Flute & Guitar Duo with his wife Jill. His Avalon Guitar Duo won First Prize in the 1985 Guitar Foundation of America International Duo Guitar Competition. Dr. Rubio is a noted pedagogue of the classical guitar. His students have been prizewinners in numerous competitions, and many now teach at colleges around the country. In addition to being a performer, Rubio is also an expert in the music of the Beatles. He teaches a very popular course on that subject at SUNY Potsdam. Rubio received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Irvine, and holds both Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in classical guitar performance from the University of Southern California, where he studied with Spanish virtuoso Pepe Romero. Prior to moving to upstate New York, he directed a very successful guitar program at Illinois State University.
